French Seams: How embarrassed am I?

I used to look at French seams and think, why the hell would anyone put themselves through that? Wouldn't you about burn your fingers off with the iron, sewing a regular seam and then having to turn the ends under and then sew that mess down?
Then Gertie showed me how.

Truth me told, before her post, I'd come across this elsewhere on the Web a few weeks ago and smacked my forehead, it's so easy. I promptly made two straight skirts with the technique. Fast, fast, fast. Faster than finishing your seams with a zigzag seam, that's for sure.

Here's a bad photo of the denim skirt I made last night (and my awesome new boots from Santa Fe).
Tra la!

Those are killer boots!

Sorta off topic - what kind of sewing machine do you use? I have an OLD portable that I'm thinking about replacing. Would love a recommendation.
