Below is a closeup of the front. I set in a line of piping, off-center, down the front, sort of like marking a placket. Eventually this will be where buttons go. The non-piped side will close just to one side of the piped side.
Initially I'd planned to line this with turquoise charmeuse (see below), but you know? That was just too punk rock for me. I'm nervous enough about the piping as it is.
I want this jacket to say, "I'm taking the truck to my ranch in Taos to sculpt and perhaps seduce a Native American artist, or at least a stack of pancakes from Pasqual's."
These buttons do not say that. They say, "PUSH HERE FOR COKE."
I am thinking about encasing the hems with some home-made bias binding, but here again, I am torn. It's got polka dots on it. That's a little too twee.
Here's the waist seam as seen at the side. Look how there is no interruption in the piping. Do you know how long that took? DO YOU? I am now stooped and cranky with eye problems and a truss, but by God, my piping is uninterrupted.
Back to the buttons. I told you I couldn't decide. So I decided to jettison the metal buttons and focus on color. First up: little turquoise jobs. I almost didn't try these on, because I thought they would be too matchy-matchy. But if you group them in a kind of artsy manner, they say "I bought these at Joann Fabrics!"
I thought, perhaps I can butch them up with adding one of those metal studs at the collar. No joy. It just looked like I'd run out of blue buttons, as in fact I had.
So I tried a red button. Take THAT.

At this point I'm just hurting myself. So I figured, in for a penny, in for a pound: I will make this coat say, "It's a Chico's kind of day. TM."
In a fit of rage, I then flung all buttons from me, except for this little square orange one, which I think I might end up going with. It's simple, it's artsy without being fussy, and orange makes a good counterpart to turquoise. Plus: only one button to sew. Yay!
Or maybe I'll just wear it without the buttons.
