Screw you, crappy Seattle weather

Seattle is lately beset by the crappiest of spring weather--endless rain and cool gray days--so I am fighting back with the wackiest rain jacket I could come up with, a matching rain bag for commuting to work on my bike, and a couple sun dresses (which I actually took with me to a conference in Las Vegas a couple weeks back).

Apologies for the bad shots; I'm in a rush today. I give you sundress #1:

And sundress #2--wearing this thing is like daring it to stop raining:
Inside of the rain-bag (the fabric is taken from a Norman Rockwell illustration):
Outside of rain bag--I probably could have done a nicer strap, but I had this technical cord on hand and thought I'd made use of it. The bag is intended to go around a leather handbag, so its sole purpose really is to be flung into my bike basket before setting off.
oh, and the pattern is from the Bag Making Bible--it's called the Fashionista Bag.
Finally, the happiest rain jacket you have ever seen, complete with mandarin collar, wonky buttons (I will need to fix those before tomorrow) and little patch pockets on the front. This is from a heavily modified version of Butterick 5145.

Yay! The raincoat is so cheery and the bag is awesome! And the sundresses make ME want to dance, and that's saying something. Sundress #2 is the happiest thing I've seen in ages. What pattern is this? Though wrap dresses do NOT work with my particular dimensions, I might be able to adapt.

I love the glasses print, fun! :-) How hard was it to sew on the raincoat fabric? I'm in need of a raincoat (assuming it ever rains here), but they are hard to find in my style/budget.

Hello, dahlinks! The sundress pattern is Butterick 5485, and it was very minimally altered, if at all. Lining it is kind of a pain in the ass (in the way that all linings are), but otherwise, the thing went together beautifully.

Oh, and CGC? The oilcloth is ABSOLUTE HELL to sew with. It's totally horrible. Go with a more normal technical fabric for a raincoat--it has to be easier than that freaking oilcloth. While I love the Echino pattern, I will never ever sew with a laminated cotton again. Just completely awful and hard.

But Maggie, give that Butterick 5485 a shot--I have lost any waist I might have had, but putting in a contrast lining (the black midriff with the B/W patterned cloth) fakes up a waist like nobody's business. Might be worth a shot.

All so cute. I wish I could find that eyeglass fabric. Just think, before you know it, it will be July and you can wear spring clothes! A teflon foot, a walking foot (or coating the underside of you foot with... something I can't recall is supposed to help with vinyl fabrics. I know I had a bear of a time last year when I made a basket with double-laminated cotton - that stuff was thick.

Is that a bright blue invisible zipper???? Love it.

Hey, you can get that sunglasses fabric here: http://www.fabricworm.com/ecsp20niglpi.html

Echino also makes a laminated cotton print with old-school cameras on it. Totally cute.

And I totally used a Teflon foot! It was still aggravating sewing the curves--I saved the collar for last because I knew it would be a total PITA. Oh well. It's done now.

And Katherine: yes, it is! It's kind of turquoise. I just wanted a little flash of color.
